Broom Finish vs. Smooth Trowel for a Concrete Patio
The finish on a patio decides how it feels underfoot, how safe it is when wet, and how it handles the Central Texas sun. Two of the most common choices, broom and smooth trowel, behave very differently in our climate.

When people picture a concrete patio, they usually think about size and shape. The surface finish gets less attention, but it has more to do with how the patio actually performs day to day. The two most requested finishes around Lockhart are a broom finish and a smooth trowel finish, and the right one depends on how you use the space and how much summer sun it gets.
Broom Finish: Grip and Practicality
A broom finish is created by dragging a stiff broom across the concrete while it is still fresh, leaving a fine, consistent texture. That texture is what gives bare feet and shoes grip when the surface is wet, which makes it the safer choice for any patio near a pool, a sprinkler zone, or an area that catches afternoon storms. It also hides minor surface imperfections and is easy to clean. For most outdoor living spaces in Central Texas, a broom finish is the practical default.
Smooth Trowel: Clean and Modern
A smooth trowel finish is worked with a steel trowel until the surface is flat and polished-looking. It gives a clean, contemporary appearance that pairs well with modern homes and covered patios. The tradeoff is traction. A smooth surface can become slick when wet, so it is better suited to covered or shaded areas that stay dry. It can also feel hotter underfoot in direct sun, which matters during a Texas summer.
Matching the Finish to the Space
The decision usually comes down to exposure. An open patio that bakes in the sun and gets wet from rain or sprinklers is a better fit for a broom finish. A covered patio or a shaded sitting area where the look matters more than traction can carry a smooth trowel finish well. Color and sealer choices factor in too, since lighter tones and the right sealer keep any finish a little cooler and safer in summer.
