Pouring a Garage or Shop Floor That Actually Holds Up

A garage or workshop floor lives a harder life than most interior slabs. Here is what separates a floor that cracks and dusts in a few years from one that stays flat and clean for decades in Central Texas.

A garage or shop floor is not just a patch of concrete you park on. It carries vehicle weight, jack stands, dropped tools, rolling toolboxes, and sometimes the point loads of a hydraulic lift. It also has to shrug off oil, brake fluid, and the abrasion of grit tracked in on tires. Finishing and sealing decide how the floor looks and cleans for years. A steel-troweled surface gives a smooth, dense finish that resists staining and is easy to sweep, while a lightly broomed surface adds traction where you want a sure footing. Sealing or coating a cured garage floor locks out oil and fluids and makes spills wipe up instead of soaking in.
