Spring Driveway Prep Checklist Before the Summer Season

Winter freeze, runoff, and tire wear can leave driveways in rougher shape than they look. Here is how to inspect, repair, and protect concrete before summer heat sets in.

Concrete driveway inspection and spring prep

Spring is the right time to take an honest look at a concrete driveway. The freeze and thaw of late winter, combined with months of vehicle weight and runoff, often expose small problems that quietly turn into expensive ones once summer heat hits. A focused walkaround now usually prevents a much larger repair later.

Start with cracking. Hairline surface cracks are usually cosmetic, but cracks that widen at one end, run across joints, or have separated edges signal movement underneath. Pair that with a look at the slab itself: standing water, sunken corners, or a noticeable lip where the driveway meets the garage or sidewalk are classic signs that the base has shifted and basic patching will not hold.

Cleaning matters before any repair work. Pressure washing removes the salt, oil, and grit that block sealers and patch material from bonding. Once the surface is clean and dry, joints should be checked for failed caulk, exposed steel, or open seams that let water reach the subgrade. Resealing joints early in the season is one of the cheapest ways to extend a driveway's life.

For driveways that are still structurally sound, a fresh penetrating sealer applied in mild spring weather protects against UV, stains, and moisture intrusion through summer. For driveways with widespread cracking, settlement, or drainage problems, spring is also the practical window to schedule a full driveway installation while the ground is workable and curing conditions are favorable.

CIMA Concrete works with property owners on driveway installation, concrete repair, and exterior flatwork. A short on-site evaluation is usually enough to confirm whether a driveway needs sealing, targeted repair, or full replacement before the busy summer stretch.
